Christopher Confero: Event Planning as Live Theatre

With a background in theatre, Christopher Confero's approach to event planning is immersive, thoughtful, and unique to each experience.

In this Q&A, he shares his perspective on inspiration, investment, and the essential role of a planner in turning a celebration into something extraordinary.

What is your signature style?

CONFERO has no signature style, we are chameleons. Though I do have standards of service that apply to all projects great or small.

How do you describe your creative approach?

My background is rooted on the stage. I see every event as live theatre that must appeal to all the senses.

Where do you search for new inspiration?

Experiencing other cultures, architecture, and art abroad.

What do you recommend investing most in?

Lighting and entertainment. You can have a room full of beautiful things, but if you can't see them—what a waste.

Team big or small: What type of events do you prefer?

I enjoy the sweet spot around 200. A food program can still be controlled but you have the capacity for larger and intentional spatial design.

How far in advance should people hire a planner?

No less than 12 months provides the best roadmap and timeline. If you truly want your pick of the litter for every vertical, 18 months, but we'll really start talking a year out.

Best advice for a bride-to-be?

Hire a planner before anything else. Utilize our connections and creativity—that's why you are investing.

What do you wish more people understood about what you do?

The time and physical labor involved. Hundreds of hours are speant making thousands of decisions. Anywhere from 50-500 artists, laborers and craftsmen are dedicating a great deal of time and talent to realize your fantasy.

If you weren’t a planner, what would you be?

A performer.
